I wanted to play basketball yesterday afternoon, but I was scared to go near my basketball pump.
If you loved "Punch-Drunk Love", then you and I are the only two people in America.
Sometimes I feel like a Slate.com reviewer for liking that movie. I've had people watch the DVD with me and been openly angry and hostile toward me for making them watch it.
I also just saw No Country and can't stop thinking/analyzing it.
Punch Drunk was the film that made me interested in Paul Thomas Anderson films.
The trailer for There Will Be Blood was before No Country and I can't wait. Even though I'm not too big on period pieces. The trailer was just creepy and strange. I'm interested in seeing him try something different (even though Punch Drunk Love was different than his previous).
Has anyone watched the small series "Tin Man" on SciFi? I have it all recored, but I want to know if it is worth the six hours.
"No Country for Old Men" blew me away too. I need to see it again, though, I had to process it for about two weeks before I could wrap my head around the central theme that the moral world is over and all we can hope for is peace in death. Bleak barely describes it.
On the other hand, it does have scenes of monkeys flying out of the evil witch's ample cleavage, so it has that going for it.

The "Big Love" family is the Henricksons.
Magnolia was more of a hit-and-miss movie for me (how could it not be with a running time of over 3 hours?), but the parts that hit were enough for me to keep him in the upper echelon of modern director/screenwriters. Boogie Nights is of course a masterpiece.
Still haven't seen No Country for Old Men, although it has now taken on a new preconceived notion for me. It went from the best movie ever (due to the critics) to the movie my friends saw and were generally satisfied with except for the ending. Hopefully that combination will keep my expectations at the point where I can enjoy the movie without exactly knowing what I should feel.
What did y'all think of "Into the Wild?"
If Benaiah and I agree on it, it must be good.
It is the cinematic equivalent of a Fiery Furnaces song; unpredictable and unbound by how things normally work, and completely earnest even though it comes really, really close to being too clever for its own good.
High school students can see R-rated films at schools with parental permission only. That many, many teachers look the other way on this rule at their own peril is a given.
Also, FWIW, nudity is much, much more frowned upon by parents than curse words.
It has that whole sequence with the topless European girl. Which is pretty long, though not particularly erotic.
24 - It is interesting that you can show a class graphic violence but not a topless woman. I wonder when our society grew so afraid of sex?
There Will Be Blood is the one I've waited for all year, since I heard PT Anderson was adapting the book.
For the record, I loved Punch Drunk Love. But Emily Watson could do anything and I'd love it.
I liked "Into The Wild" too, but was also a bit frustrated by it; thought it meandered a bit much and ended up being a bit too montage-y. (And yes, I've read the book, so I know his journey is a meandering one.)
"Zodiac" is another of my favorites this year, although (again) I understand why some don't care for it. Its early release works against it as well. I'm glad to see it showing up on a lot of Top 10 lists, but I don't expect it to get many nominations, aside from maybe a couple tech ones. Too bad.
"Punch Drunk Love" was great I really enjoyed it as well, so I guess that makes 3 of us.
I have not seen a lot of movies this year, but No Country was definitely the best film I saw and I guess I would put Juno second.
I missed too many films this year, too, or at least, too many before I had to finally complete my own darned "Best of '07" list - enough where I could see changing half the films on the list in another two months after I've finally seen them all.
But here they are, at least for the moment:

I tried desperately to get a screener for Jesse James after missing it in theaters, to no avail. But at least it's officially coming to DVD next month.
Yeah my colleague had "4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days" as the best film of the year. Of course he had the advantage of seeing that one in Berlin. Hasn't opened here yet.
Oh, and Trainwreck, I'm finally seeing Juno tomorrow so that may be one reason I didn't have it in my top list...
Hm, Mark Kermode, notoriously finicky critic for the BBC, thought it was the best film of the year and saw it twice. Maybe it's this year's "The New World." Some embrace it and find it beautiful, others find it overlong and ponderous.
Anyway, I watched Zodiac on HD-DVD, and it was just as good as when I saw it in the theaters. The supplemental documentaries are fantastic and well worth the price of the DVD.
I'm on board the "Juno" train, but I guess that there is a significant amount of antipathy toward it.
