I finally saw "No Country For Old Men" yesterday, and man that was a heavy movie. Not the most uplifting film. I'd say it was good, but it needs more time to sink in for me to properly rate it.

I wanted to play basketball yesterday afternoon, but I was scared to go near my basketball pump.

1 - Yeah, it's well-done but just so bleak.

Has anyone seen There Will Be Blood yet? That is my most anticipated movie. I've loved every P.T. Anderson movie made so far.

If you loved "Punch-Drunk Love", then you and I are the only two people in America.

Sometimes I feel like a Slate.com reviewer for liking that movie. I've had people watch the DVD with me and been openly angry and hostile toward me for making them watch it.

3 - Loved the first half, second half not so much. But colleagues have liked the whole thing a lot.

I really liked Punch-Drunk Love, but I have only seen it once. I need to see it again. I got such a surreal feeling the whole movie.

6 - Didn't like it either.

I think it's been a great end of the year for movies, especially since the summer was so lackluster.
I also just saw No Country and can't stop thinking/analyzing it.
Punch Drunk was the film that made me interested in Paul Thomas Anderson films.
The trailer for There Will Be Blood was before No Country and I can't wait. Even though I'm not too big on period pieces. The trailer was just creepy and strange. I'm interested in seeing him try something different (even though Punch Drunk Love was different than his previous).

LAT'ed from the last thread:

Has anyone watched the small series "Tin Man" on SciFi? I have it all recored, but I want to know if it is worth the six hours.

I hate "Magnolia", but I love, love, love "Punch Drunk Love". It is one of my favorite movies of all time. I don't want to step on any toes here, but I think it is a modern day "Harold and Maude". Dysfunctional, maybe even a little gross, but the love at its center is so sweet it makes you overlook the kind of creepy feeling you get.

"No Country for Old Men" blew me away too. I need to see it again, though, I had to process it for about two weeks before I could wrap my head around the central theme that the moral world is over and all we can hope for is peace in death. Bleak barely describes it.

9 I watched it, and didn't think it was very good. It's an interesting idea very badly written and acted. The dialogue is terrible, and a lot of the acting isn't much better. The only really good performance is by the guy playing the scarecrow character. Richard Dreyfus is wasted.

On the other hand, it does have scenes of monkeys flying out of the evil witch's ample cleavage, so it has that going for it.

I hated Harold and Maude; didn't hate, but was deeply bored by Punch Drunk Love. Actually, I never made it all the way through either.

Besides a few of you fine folk, I'm the only person I know who likes Punch-Drunk Love. Adam Sandler's character is just so interesting in the ways that he's at the same time so creepy and so innocently fragile.

Magnolia was more of a hit-and-miss movie for me (how could it not be with a running time of over 3 hours?), but the parts that hit were enough for me to keep him in the upper echelon of modern director/screenwriters. Boogie Nights is of course a masterpiece.

Still haven't seen No Country for Old Men, although it has now taken on a new preconceived notion for me. It went from the best movie ever (due to the critics) to the movie my friends saw and were generally satisfied with except for the ending. Hopefully that combination will keep my expectations at the point where I can enjoy the movie without exactly knowing what I should feel.

This is an awesomely helpful list. It would be awesomely helpfuller if it listed which movies alongside the acting performances, for those of us who haven't kept up that well.

16 - Sometimes actors get awards for more than one film, though that hasn't really been the case this year. I'll see about adding them in.
2007-12-19 16:08:34
18.   Eric Enders
Wow, so the actor with the most awards so far is Amy Ryan. Beadie Russell, you've come a long way.

Okay, stealth poster on this site. Who saw "Into the Wild?" I haven't seen it; I'm teaching the book in January and playing around with the idea of screening the film with the studio's permission (provided that's even possible). But I digress...

What did y'all think of "Into the Wild?"

19 - One of my favorites of the year.
2007-12-19 18:11:43
21.   Benaiah
19,20 - It was amazing. It handles a pretty complicated story with delicate grace and its stunningly beautiful. It has a little bit of nudity in it though, so I would be careful screening it for a class.
2007-12-19 18:56:10
22.   Jon Weisman
21 - Does it? No more nudity than Romeo and Juliet, right?

If Benaiah and I agree on it, it must be good.

2007-12-19 21:43:15
23.   Agronox
It's odd about Punch-Drunk Love... seeing it in the theater, with an audience, I liked it but thought it was the worst of the PT Anderson films. Seeing it a second time, alone, I loved it.

It is the cinematic equivalent of a Fiery Furnaces song; unpredictable and unbound by how things normally work, and completely earnest even though it comes really, really close to being too clever for its own good.

2007-12-20 09:00:08
24.   Suffering Bruin
[20-21] Many thanks. I'll keep you posted on how my "screening" idea goes. It might just be an agreement to get the kids together at a movie theater.

High school students can see R-rated films at schools with parental permission only. That many, many teachers look the other way on this rule at their own peril is a given.

Also, FWIW, nudity is much, much more frowned upon by parents than curse words.

2007-12-20 11:11:17
25.   Benaiah
22 - I know, it is a rare movie indeed that we both love.

It has that whole sequence with the topless European girl. Which is pretty long, though not particularly erotic.

24 - It is interesting that you can show a class graphic violence but not a topless woman. I wonder when our society grew so afraid of sex?

Into the Wild is my favorite movie of 2007. Granted, I have not seen all of the Award worthy films out there, but Into the Wild is the only movie I've seen in a while that I really want to go back and see again. Its long (not in a bad way) but very good.

I can't think of any way to tie into this thread. But the amount of time I spend here should make obvious how much I know about entertainment or care (no judgement at all). But I just found a film with Juliette Lewis and William Fichter, two of the only acters I admire.( in the same film)!! I'm stunned.

Strange Days was released in 1995.

30.   Greg Brock
I enjoyed No Country very much, and I was extremely impressed with Josh Brolin's performance. But the ending fell a little flat. Not in an "I'm not hip enough to 'get it' sort of way." I got it. Still flat.

There Will Be Blood is the one I've waited for all year, since I heard PT Anderson was adapting the book.

For the record, I loved Punch Drunk Love. But Emily Watson could do anything and I'd love it.

31.   Telemachos
I loved "There Will Be Blood". Really just a juggernaut of a movie, although I understand why some don't like it. If Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win the Best Actor Oscar, there will be blood flowing in the streets. (Sorry, had to.) I also think PT Anderson deserves a Best Director win, although I'm pretty sure he won't get it. I've never been much of a PT Anderson fan either, but TWBB is very different than his other stuff.

I liked "Into The Wild" too, but was also a bit frustrated by it; thought it meandered a bit much and ended up being a bit too montage-y. (And yes, I've read the book, so I know his journey is a meandering one.)

"Zodiac" is another of my favorites this year, although (again) I understand why some don't care for it. Its early release works against it as well. I'm glad to see it showing up on a lot of Top 10 lists, but I don't expect it to get many nominations, aside from maybe a couple tech ones. Too bad.

I also liked Punch Drunk Love a lot, but most of my friends did not.

I have not seen a lot of movies this year, but No Country was definitely the best film I saw and I guess I would put Juno second.

Oops posted this in the wrong thread:

I missed too many films this year, too, or at least, too many before I had to finally complete my own darned "Best of '07" list - enough where I could see changing half the films on the list in another two months after I've finally seen them all.
But here they are, at least for the moment:
http://www.greencine.com/central/bestof07craig

I tried desperately to get a screener for Jesse James after missing it in theaters, to no avail. But at least it's officially coming to DVD next month.

Yeah my colleague had "4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days" as the best film of the year. Of course he had the advantage of seeing that one in Berlin. Hasn't opened here yet.

Oh, and Trainwreck, I'm finally seeing Juno tomorrow so that may be one reason I didn't have it in my top list...

Jesse James, to me, was about 55 minutes of movie jammed into 160 minutes.
2008-01-04 11:27:28
37.   underdog
Well, couldn't someone have at least sent me that 55 minutes ?

Hm, Mark Kermode, notoriously finicky critic for the BBC, thought it was the best film of the year and saw it twice. Maybe it's this year's "The New World." Some embrace it and find it beautiful, others find it overlong and ponderous.

How did this older thread get up to the top?

Anyway, I watched Zodiac on HD-DVD, and it was just as good as when I saw it in the theaters. The supplemental documentaries are fantastic and well worth the price of the DVD.

Jon just bumps them up when there are more awards handed out.

I'm on board the "Juno" train, but I guess that there is a significant amount of antipathy toward it.

I saw "Into the Wild" last week. I think the Academy got it right--Hal Holbrook deserves a nomination, if not more, but that's it.

I saw "There Will Be Blood" last week and that was a masterpiece. Too hard for me to choose between TWBB and No Country, so I would be happy if either film wins. I am expecting the Coens to win though, because of their overall career.
