Betty Succeeds

Ugly Betty might be the best new show of the season - that I've seen so far, anyway. The tone is spot on: not too silly, not too serious. Some of the characters' behavior is frivolous, but Betty (America Ferrera) is simultaneously grounded and endearing. We'll have to see where it goes from here, but it was a promising debut (in the ratings as well, according to Rick Kissell of Variety).

In today's 10 Actors to Watch section in Variety, Chad Gervich has a short feature on Ferrera. I contributed a quick look at Lizzy Caplan of The Class.

(I understand that the above links are subscription-required ... still figuring out what to do about that as far as Screen Jam goes.)

Okay, one guy at work thought it was awful, so it's not a universal success.

I thought it was good. I liked that the joke wasn't at Betty's expense despite the title. Sure there were some slapstick moments, but the message was that Betty was a good, genuine person and the fashionistas were unhinged and out of touch. I think the show is worth it just to see Betty's outfit for her first day of work (also Betty's coworker is amusing). I just finished reading The Devil Wears Prada a month or two ago, so this is a funny take on the same world.
